Agriculture E-Initiative

Globalization is exposing agriculture community to fierce competition. Adopting professional management practices is need of an hour and use of Information technology tools, software, Internet etc. has become unavoidable to sustain growth. In this Information Age, at SHIVRAI, we are instrumental in developing innovative applications using ICTs, which effectively help various stakeholders in agriculture sector.

ICT for development - community project

During the years 2002 -2006, we were proactively involved in ICT for development community project – ‘Parivartan Network’. This project was jointly launched by Maharashtra Knowledge Corporation Ltd. and NETRA. The scope of this project was to establish a network of individuals and institutions to share the knowledge and provide various services for rural population through CLIC (Community Learning and Information Center).

For this project we interviewed 300 computer centers and selected 60 CLICs. These CLICs were given hands on training for providing services to farmers. At SHIVRAI, we conceptualized, designed, developed and hosted a knowledge web portal in regional Indian language, which was dedicated to farmers and farming community as a whole. Around 800 pages of Agricultural content in Marathi was hosted on the web portal site. This content is sourced from various partner organizations like, ICRISAT, BAIF, ARI, YCMOU, Dept. of Agriculture, Maharashtra state to name a few and from private consultants. Market related data was collected from APMCs on daily basis and market advisory services were made available for farmers. We have performed various experiments in developing agricultural content in various forms like text, audio, video, PowerPoint presentations and animations, FAQs, Interviews etc.

We deployed Agricultural Expert Advice service at root level through 60 CLICs scattered across Pune and Ahmednagar districts in Maharashtra, India. We received queries from farmers over the web portal and scientists and experts of various partner organizations replied to them.

We had also handled a responsibility to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for Virtual University For Maharashtra’s Agrarian Prosperity (VUMAP) for Department of Agriculture, Maharashtra, India.
